Finish Well: Running the Race Set Before Us

Myron Stoltzfus48m
Series: 1 Corinthians

5. The title of this sermon is "Finishing Well: Running the Race Set Before Us." The Scriptures here lay out the need for us to run the race of life well, pulling examples from athletes who are self-disciplined in vs 24-25, and from Paul's own manner of running and fighting in vs. 26-27. Paul now presses the same urgency on the Corinthians: Liberty without self-discipline, and without heeding Israel's history, may lead to disqualification. This is written, not to unbelievers, but to us as believers, to the covenant community.

Liberty & The Stewardship of the Gospel

Series: 1 Corinthians

The apostle who is free from all men makes himself a slave to all so that some may be saved, and that he himself may share in the gospel's prize. Freedom is a trust: it is spent in service, not in self. The Paradox of Liberty (v. 19) Three Adaptations (vv. 20–22a) The Governing Purpose (vv. 22b–23) A Word of Caution: The Seeker-Sensitive misuse of this text.
